Ten Visits at the Tomb

 

 

 

1.  The Interment

 

John 19:41

Now in the place where he was crucified

ἦν    δὲ  ἐν  τῷ   τόπῳ   ὅπου   ἐσταυρώθη 

Ehn de en tohi topohi hopou estaurohtheh

                                                                               Gn33:19; 50; 32:22    

there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre,

κῆπος,   καὶ ἐν  τῷ   κήπῳ     μνημεῖον    καινὸν,

kehpos, kai en tohi kehpohi mnehmeion kainon

 

wherein was never man yet laid.

ἐν   ᾧ     οὐδέπω   οὐδεὶς  ἐτέθη·

Mark 15:46d

Joseph laid him in a sepulchre

 (Ἰωσὴφ)   κατέθηκεν  αὐτὸν ἐν μνημείῳ    ὃ   ἦν

Iohsehph katethehken auton en mnehmati ho ehn

 

which was hewn out of rock.

λελατομημένον ἐκ πέτρας.

Luke 23:53

He laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone,

 (Ἰωσὴφ)  ἔθηκεν   αὐτὸ  ἐν  μνήματι   λαξευτῷ,

Houtos  ethehken auton en mnehmati lakseutohi

 

wherein never man before was laid.

οὗ   οὐκ   ἦν  οὐδεὶς  οὐδέπω  κείμενος·

Matthew 27:60

Joseph laid it in his new

καὶ (Ἰωσὴφ)   ἔθηκεν … αὐτὸ ἐν τῷ καινῷ αὐτοῦ

Ho Iohsehph ethehken auto en tohi kainohi autou

tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock . . .

μνημείῳ         ὃ  ἐλατόμησεν  ἐν  τῇ  πέτρᾳ,

Luke 23:55

And the women also followed after—

Κατακολουθήσασαι δὲ  αἱ  γυναῖκες,

which came with him from Galilea,

αἵτινες   ἦσαν  συνεληλυθυῖαι  αὐτῷ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας,

they beheld the sepulchre and how his body was laid.

ἐθεάσαντο τὸ μνημεῖον      καὶ ὡς      ἐτέθη  τὸ  σῶμα αὐτοῦ,

Mark 15:47

And Mary Magdalene and Mary of Joses

ἡ δὲ Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία Ἰωσῆ

beheld where he was laid.

ἐθεώρουν   ποῦ  τίθεται.

Matthew 27:61

And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary,

ἦν    δὲ  ἐκεῖ Μαρία     ἡ   Μαγδαληνὴ    καὶ   ἡ   ἄλλη Μαρία

sitting over against the sepulchre.

καθήμεναι ἀπέναντι τοῦ τάφου.

John 19:42

There therefore because of the Jews’ preparation,

ἐκεῖ  οὖν διὰ  τὴν παρασκευὴν  τῶν Ἰουδαίων,

Ekei oun dia tehn paraskeuehn tohn Ioudaiohn

for the sepulchre was nigh at hand, laid they Jesus.

ὅτι   ἐγγὺς  ἦν  τὸ  μνημεῖον,     ἔθηκαν   τὸν Ἰησοῦν.

Mark 15:46f

And he rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.

καὶ προσεκύλισε λίθον ἐπὶ  τὴν  θύραν τοῦ μνημείου. 

Kai prosekulisen lithon epi tehn thuran tou mnehmeiou.

Matthew 27:60

...and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre,

…καὶ προσκυλίσας λίθον μέγαν  τῇ   θύρᾳ   τοῦ μνημείου

and departed.

Luke 23:56a

And the women returned, and prepared spices and ointments.

ὑποστρέψασαι   δὲ   ἡτοίμασαν   ἀρώματα  καὶ μύρα.

Lukas 23:54

Because that day was the Preparation

2.  Tomb Secured

 

Matthew 28:5a

Answering, the angel told the women . . .

ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ  ὁ    ἄγγελος  εἶπε  ταῖς  γυναιξί·

27:62

Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation,

the chief priests and Pharisees came together

πρὸς Πιλᾶτον λέγοντες· Κύριε,   ἐμνήσθημεν     ὅτι

that deceiver said while he was yet alive,

ἐκεῖνος  ὁ  πλάνος εἶπεν ἔτι ζῶν,

(the) third day I wil rise again.

μετὰ  τρεῖς   ἡμέρας    ἐγείρομαι.

Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure

κέλευσον οὖν ἀσφαλισθῆναι  τὸν τάφον

for as long as it is the third day

ἕως     τῆς  τρίτης  ἡμέρας,

heohs tehs tritehs hehmeras,

lest his disciples come by night,

μήποτε   ἐλθόντες οἱ   μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ …

and steal him away and say unto the people,

κλέψωσιν  αὐτὸν καὶ  εἴπωσι    τῷ   λαῷ,

he was raised from the dead;

ἠγέρθη     ἀπὸ  τῶν  νεκρῶν· καὶ

so the last error shall be worse than the first.

ἔσται  ἡ     ἐσχάτη   πλάνη  χείρων    τῆς  πρώτης.

Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch :

ἔφη     αὐτοῖς  ὁ  Πιλᾶτος· Ἔχετε   κουστωδίαν·

Epheh autois ho Pilatos:   Echete koustohdian!

 

go your way, make it as sure as ye can.

ὑπάγετε   ἀσφαλίσασθε  ὡς   οἴδατε.

So they went, and made the sepulchre sure,

οἱ    δὲ  πορευθέντες ἠσφαλίσαντο τὸν τάφον

3.  The angel of the Lord and the Resurrection

 

Matthew 28:1

In the end of the Sabbath,

Ὀψὲ  δὲ  σαββάτων,

Opse de Sabbatohn

 

As it (the end of the Sabbath) began to dawn

τῇ    ἐπιφωσκούσῃ

tehi epifohskousehi

 

toward the first day of the week,

εἰς Μίαν σαββάτων,

set out Mary Magdalene and the other Mary

And behold, there was a great earthquake:

for the angel of the Lord descending from heaven,

came and rolled back the stone

…   προσελθὼν ἀπεκύλισε τὸν λίθον

from the door and sat upon it.

His countenance was like lightning,

ἦν    δὲ   ἡ    ἰδέα   αὐτοῦ ὡς    ἀστραπὴ

and his raiment white as snow;

καὶ τὸ ἔνδυμα αὐτοῦ λευκὸν ὡσεὶ χιών.

And for fear of him the keepers did shake,

ἀπὸ δὲ τοῦ  φόβου  αὐτοῦ ἐσείσθησαν   οἱ   τηροῦντες

καὶ    ἐγένοντο        ὡσεὶ νεκροί . . .

Matthew 27:52b

Many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

Πολλὰ     σώματα τῶν κεκοιμημένων    ἁγίων    ἠγέρθη,

and came out of the graves after his resurrection,

and went into the holy city and appeared unto many.

Matthew 28:5a      

. . . answered the angel the women and explained to them.

John 20:1

The First Day of the week

Τῇ    δὲ  Μιᾷ   τῶν σαββάτων

cometh Mary when yet early dark it was,

Μαρία  ἡ   Μαγδαληνὴ  ἔρχεται   πρωῒ  σκοτίας ἔτι οὔσης

Maria heh Magdaleneh erchetai  prohï skotias eti ousehs

 

unto the sepulchre and seeth the stone

εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον,   καὶ βλέπει τὸν λίθον

eis to mnehmeion kai blepei ton lithon

 

taken away from the sepulchre,

ἠρμένον   ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου.

Then she runneth and cometh to Simon Peter and

τρέχει οὖν καὶ  ἔρχεται πρὸς Σίμωνα Πέτρον καὶ

to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them,

καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· πρὸς τὸν  ἄλλον   μαθητὴν     ὃν   ἐφίλει   ὁ   Ἰησοῦς,

kai legei  autois: pros  ton  allon  mathehtehn hon ephilei ho Iehsous

 

They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre

Ἦραν τὸν Κύριον ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου,

Ehran ton Kurion ek tou mnehmeiou

                       

and we know not where they have laid him.

καὶ οὐκ οἴδαμεν   ποῦ   ἔθηκαν   αὐτόν.

5.  Peter and John

 

John 20:3

Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple,

ἐξῆλθεν       οὖν  ὁ  Πέτρος καὶ  ὁ ἄλλος μαθητής

Eksehlthen oun ho Petros  kai ho allos  mathehtehs

 

and came to the sepulchre.

καὶ  ἤρχοντο   εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον.

Then cometh Simon Peter and went into the sepulchre.

… καὶ (Πέτρος) εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον

and seeth the linen clothes lie

καὶ θεωρεῖ   τὰ ὀθόνια  κείμενα

and the napkin that was about his head,

καὶ τὸ σουδάριον, ὃ  ἦν  ἐπὶ  τῆς  κεφαλῆς  αὐτοῦ,

kai to soudarion ho ehn epi tehs kephalehs autou

 

not lying with the linen clothes

οὐ  μετὰ  τῶν  ὀθονίων  κείμενον,

ou meta tohn odoniohn keimenon

 

but apart wrapped together in a place by itself.

ἀλλὰ χωρὶς ἐντετυλιγμένον εἰς  ἕνα τόπον. 

alla chohris entetulikmenon eis hena topon.

 

[If the body had been removed to be buried somewhere else, the linen cloths would have been removed with it.]

Then went in also that other disciple

τότε οὖν  εἰσῆλθε    καὶ  ὁ  ἄλλος μαθητὴς

which came first to the sepulchre and he saw and believed

ὁ    ἐλθὼν  πρῶτος  εἰς  τὸ μνημεῖον,  καὶ εἶδε  καὶ ἐπίστευσεν·

that as yet they knew not the Scripture,

οὐδέπω  γὰρ  ᾔδεισαν    τὴν  γραφὴν

that he must rise again from the dead.

ὅτι δεῖ αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν  ἀναστῆναι.

Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.

6.  The Empty Tomb

 

Luke 24:22

Certain women of our company astonished us,

γυναῖκές τινες  ἐξ     ἡμῶν      ἐξέστησαν   ἡμᾶς

which were early at the sepulchre

γενόμεναι   ὄρθριαι  ἐπὶ τὸ  μνημεῖον

and not finding his body,

καὶ  μὴ   εὑροῦσαι  τὸ  σῶμα αὐτοῦ,

they came, saying that they had also seen a vision

of angels who said that he was alive.

ἀγγέλων  ἑωρακέναι,   οἳ  λέγουσιν αὐτὸν  ζῆν.

And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre

and found it even so as the women had said:

Luke 24:1

Now upon the First Day of the week, very early in the morning

they came unto the sepulchre ... and certain others with them,

bringing the spices which they had prepared.

It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna

ἦσαν   δὲ   ἡ    Μαγδαληνὴ Μαρία καὶ Ἰωάννα

and Mary of James and other women with them

καὶ Μαρία   … Ἰακώβου καὶ  αἱ  λοιπαὶ σὺν αὐταῖς,

which told these things unto the disciples.

αἳ ἔλεγον πρὸς τοὺς ἀποστόλους ταῦτα.

And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

εὗρον    δὲ τὸν λίθον ἀποκεκυλισμένον ἀπὸ τοῦ μνημείου,

And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

καὶ εἰσελθοῦσαι οὐχ  εὗρον  τὸ σῶμα  τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ.

And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout,

behold, two men stood

καὶ ἰδοὺ  ἄνδρες δύο ἐπέστησαν.

by them in shining garments.

αὐταῖς ἐν ἐσθήτεσιν ἀστραπτούσαις

As they were afraid and bowed down their faces

ἐμφόβων      δὲ   γενομένων      …      καὶ κλινουσῶν

to the earth, they said unto them,

τὸ πρόσωπον εἰς τὴν  γῆν    εἶπον πρὸς αὐτάς·

Why seek ye The Living among the dead?

Τί  ζητεῖτε   τὸν  ζῶντα    μετὰ  τῶν νεκρῶν; 

Ti dzehteite ton Dzohnta meta tohn nekrohn?

He is not here, but was raised: remember

οὐκ ἔστιν  ὧδε,   ἀλλ’  ἠγέρθη·     μνήσθητε       

Ouk estin hohde alla ehgertheh! Mnehsthehte

 

how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

ὡς   ἐλάλησεν   ὑμῖν  ἔτι  ὢν  ἐν  τῇ  Γαλιλαίᾳ, 

hohs elalehsen humin eti ohn en tehi Galilaiai,

saying, The Son of man must be delivered and be crucified

λέγων ὅτι δεῖ τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου … … παραδοθῆναι

into the hands of sinful men

εἰς  χεῖρας   ἀνθρώπων     ἁμαρτωλῶν   καὶ  σταυρωθῆναι,

and the third day rise again.

καὶ  τῇ   τρίτῃ    ἡμέρᾳ     ἀναστῆναι.

And they remembered his words

καὶ   ἐμνήσθησαν    τῶν     ῥημάτων    αὐτοῦ, 

Kai emnehsthehsan tohn rhehmatohn autou.

and returned from the sepulchre and

καὶ  ὑποστρέψασαι ἀπὸ τοῦ μνημείου

kai hupostrepsasai apo tou mnehmeiou

 

told all these things unto the eleven and to all the rest.

ἀπήγγειλαν ταῦτα πάντα τοῖς ἕνδεκα καὶ πᾶσι  τοῖς λοιποῖς.

And their words seemed to them as

καὶ   ἐφάνησαν   ἐνώπιον   αὐτῶν   ὡσεὶ

idle tales, and they believed them not. [Markus 16:8.]

7.  Peter has another look

 

Luke 24:12 [TR]

Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre;

ὁ    δὲ Πέτρος ἀναστὰς ἔδραμεν ἐπὶ τὸ μνημεῖον,

and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes

καὶ παρακύψας βλέπει τὰ ὀθόνια

and departed,

καὶ  ἀπῆλθε

wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

8.  Women return to “see again”

 

Mark 16:2

And very early in the morning the First Day of the week

καὶ λίαν πρωῒ    τς   μιᾶς    …   σαββάτων

to come they came upon the sepulchre

ἔρχονται  ἐπὶ τὸ μνημεῖον,

erchontai epi to mnehma,

 

at the rising of the sun.

ἀνατείλαντος τοῦ ἡλίου.

And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away

καὶ ἔλεγον πρὸς ἑαυτάς·  Τίς ἀποκυλίσει ἡμῖν

the stone from the door of the sepulchre?!

τὸν λίθον ἐκ  τῆς θύρας  τοῦ μνημείου;

And when they looked again, they saw that

καὶ ἀναβλέψασαι θεωροῦσιν   ὅτι  

Kai anablepsasai theohrousin hoti

 

the stone was cast away uphill :

ἀποκεκύλισται ὁ λίθος·

despite it was very great.

ἦν  γὰρ μέγας σφόδρα.

Again entering into the sepulchre, they saw

καὶ εἰσελθοῦσαι εἰς τὸ  μνημεῖον   εἶδον

Kai eiselthousai eis to mnehmeion eidon

 

a young man sitting on the right side,

νεανίσκον καθήμενον     ἐν τοῖς δεξιοῖς,

neaniskon kathehmenon  en tois deksiois

 

clothed in a long white garment.

περιβεβλημένον  στολὴν λευκήν.

peribeblehmenon stolehn leukehn.

 

And they were frightened.

καὶ ἐξεθαμβήθησαν. 

kai eksethambehsehsan.

And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted :

ὁ     δὲ λέγει αὐταῖς· Μὴ ἐκθαμβεῖσθε·

Ho de legei autais· Meh ekthambeisthe!

 

Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth which was crucified :

Ἰησοῦν   ζητεῖτε   τὸν   Ναζαρηνὸν   τὸν ἐσταυρωμένον·

Iehsoun dzehteite ton Nadzarehnon ton estaurohmenon.

 

He was raised [is risen]; he is not here :

ἠγέρθη,       οὐκ ἔστιν ὧδε·

Ehgertheh, ouk estin hohde;

 

Behold the place where they laid him.

ἴδε  ὁ  τόπος  ὅπου   ἔθηκαν   αὐτόν.

But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter

ἀλλ’ ὑπάγετε εἴπατε τοῖς μαθηταῖς  αὐτοῦ  καὶ  τῷ  Πέτρῳ

Alla hupagete eipate tois mathehtais autou kai tohi Petrohi

that he goeth before you into Galilee :

ὅτι   προάγει  ὑμᾶς  εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν·

hoti proagei humahs eis to  Galilaian.

 

there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

ἐκεῖ  αὐτὸν ὄψεσθε,  καθὼς   εἶπεν  ὑμῖν.

Ekei auton opsesthe kathohs eipen humihn.

And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre;

καὶ  ἐξελθοῦσαι  ἔφυγον  ἀπὸ τοῦ μνημείου·

Kai ekselthousai ephugon apo tou mnehmeiou,

 

for they trembled and were amazed :

εἶχε       δὲ αὐτὰς τρόμος καὶ ἔκστασις,

eichen gar autas tromos kai ekstasis.

 

neither said they anything to any(one); so afraid were they.

καὶ  οὐδενὶ οὐδὲν  εἶπον· ἐφοβοῦντο γάρ. 

Kai oudeni ouden eipan, ephobounto gar.

John 20:11

But Mary had had stood after at the sepulchre without

Μαρία δὲ εἱστήκει    πρὸς  τῷ   μνημείῳ     κλαίουσα ἔξω

Maria de heistehkei pros tohi mnehmeiohi eksoh klaiousa.

 

weeping; and as she wept, she stooped down into the spulchre

ὡς      οὖν ἔκλαιε, παρέκυψεν εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον

and seeth two angels in white sitting,

καὶ θεωρεῖ   δύο ἀγγέλους ἐν λευκοῖς καθεζομένους

the one at the head, and the other at the feet  

ἕνα   πρὸς  τῇ    κεφαλῇ   καὶ ἕνα  πρὸς τοῖς ποσίν,

hena pros tehi kephalehi kai hena pros tois posin

 

where the body of Jesus had lain.

ὅπου   ἔκειτο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ. 

hopou ekeito to sohma tou Iehsou.

And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou?

καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῇ   ἐκεῖνοι·  Γύναι, τί κλαίεις;

Kai legousin autehi ekeinoi: Gunai, ti klaieis?

 

She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord,

λέγει αὐτοῖς· Ὅτι ἦραν τὸν Κύριόν μου,

Legei autois hoti ehran ton Kurion mou,

 

and I know not where they have laid him.

καὶ οὐκ οἶδα ποῦ ἔθηκαν  αὐτόν. 

kai ouk oida pou ethehkan auton.

And when she had thus said, she turned herself back,

καὶ ταῦτα εἰποῦσα ἐστράφη  εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω,

Tauta       eipousa estrapheh eis ta opisoh

 

and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.

καὶ  θεωρεῖ  τὸν Ἰησοῦν   ἑστῶτα,  καὶ οὐκ  ᾔδει ὅτι   Ἰησοῦς  ἐστι. 

kai theohrei ton Iehsoun hestohta kai ouk ehidei hoti Iehsous estin.

Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou?

λέγει   αὐτῇ   ὁ   Ἰησοῦς·   Γύναι, τί κλαίεις; τίνα ζητεῖς;

Legei autehi ho Jehsous: Ginai, ti klaieis? Tina dzehteis?

 

Whom seekest thou? She supposing him to be the gardener,

ἐκείνη    δοκοῦσα  ὅτι  ὁ   κηπουρός  ἐστι,

Ekeineh dokousa hoti ho kehpouros estin!

 

saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence,

λέγει  αὐτῷ·   Κύριε, εἰ σὺ ἐβάστασας αὐτόν,

Legei autohi: Kurie, ei su  ebastasas  auton,

 

tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him.

εἰπέ μοι  ποῦ ἔθηκας  αὐτόν,  κἀγὼ αὐτὸν ἀρῶ. 

eipe moi pou ethehkas auton, kagoh auton aroh.

Jesus saith unto her, Mary!

λέγει  αὐτῇ     Ἰησοῦς·    Μαρία.

Legei autehi ... Jehsous: Mariam!

 

She turned herself, and saith unto him,

στραφεῖσα  ἐκείνη   λέγει αὐτῷ·        …

Strapheisa ekeineh, legei autohi Hebraisti:

 

Rabboni; which is to say, Master.

Ραββουνί, ὃ λέγεται, διδάσκαλε.

Rabbouni (ho legetai didaskale).

Jesus saith unto her, Don’t stay here by me;

λέγει  αὐτῇ      Ἰησοῦς·  Μή   μου  ἅπτου·

Legei autehi ... Iehsous: Meh mou haptou,

 

for I am not yet ascended to my Father:

οὔπω  γὰρ ἀναβέβηκα πρὸς τὸν πατέρα μου·

oupoh gar anabebehka pros ton Patera.

 

But go to my brethren, and say unto them,

πορεύου δὲ πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφούς  μου καὶ εἰπὲ αὐτοῖς·

Poreuou de pros tous adelphous mou kai eipe autois:

 

I ascend unto my Father, and your Father;

ἀναβαίνω πρὸς τὸν πατέρα μου καὶ πατέρα ὑμῶν,

Anabainoh pros ton Patera mou kai Patera humohn

 

and to my God, and your God.

καὶ  Θεόν  μου  καὶ  Θεὸν   ὑμῶν. 

kai Theon mou kai Theon humohn!

 

Mark 16:9

Thus, risen, Jesus early the First Day of the week appeared

Ἀναστὰς δὲ πρωῒ     Πρώτῃ   σαββάτου ἐφάνη

Anastas de, proh-i Prohtehi sabbatou ephaneh—

 

first to Mary Magdalene.

πρῶτον  Μαρίᾳ   τῇ    Μαγδαληνῇ,

John 20:18

Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples

ἔρχεται   Μαρία      ἡ    Μαγδαληνὴ ἀπαγγέλλουσα τοῖς μαθηταῖς

that she had seen the Lord,

ὅτι      ἑώρακε    τὸν Κύριον,

and that he had spoken these things unto her.

Marke 16:10

And she went and told them

ἐκείνη    πορευθεῖσα  ἀπήγγειλε  τοῖς

that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.

10.  SECOND APPEARANCE

 

Mary Magdalene therefore was not with them when the other women together with Joanna and Mary of James had gone to the sepulchre again where . . .

 

Matthew 28:5a      

. . . answered the angel the women and explained to them...

. . .ἀποκριθεὶς   δὲ   ὁ   ἄγγελος  εἶπε  ταῖς  γυναιξί·

. . .appokritheis de ho anggelos eipen tais gunaiksin:

 

Fear not ye:

Μὴ φοβεῖσθε ὑμεῖς·

Meh phobeisthe humeis!

 

for I know that ye seek Jesus which was crucified.

οἶδα  γὰρ  ὅτι  Ἰησοῦν  τὸν ἐσταυρωμένον  ζητεῖτε· 

Oida gar hoti Iehsoun ton estaurohmenon dzehteite.

He is not here because he was raised as he said.

οὐκ  ἔστιν ὧδε·       ἠγέρθη   γὰρ  καθὼς  εἶπε.

Ouk estin hohde; ehgertheh gar kathohs eipen.

 

Come in! See the place where the Lord lay.

δεῦτε ἴδετε  τὸν τόπον ὅπου  ἔκειτο ὁ Κύριος. 

Deute idete ton topon hopou ekeito.

Indeed rather, Go quickly and tell his disciples

καὶ  ταχὺ  πορευθεῖσαι εἴπατε τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ

Kai tachu poreutheisai eipate tois mathehtais autou

 

that he was raised and is risen from the dead!

ὅτι     ἠγέρθη    ἀπὸ τῶν νεκρῶν,

hoti ehgertheh apo tohn nekrohn.

 

And behold, he goeth before you into Galilee;

καὶ  ἰδοὺ προάγει   ὑμᾶς    εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν·

Kai idou proagei humahs eis tehn Galilaian,

 

there will you see him.

ἐκεῖ αὐτὸν ὄψεσθε·

ekei auton opsesthe.

 

Behold, I command you!

ἰδοὺ εἶπον ὑμῖν. 

Idou eipon humihn!

And they departed quickly from the sepulchre

καὶ ἐξελθοῦσαι  ταχὺ  ἀπὸ τοῦ μνημείου

Kai apelthousai tachu apo tou mnehmeiou

 

with fear and great joy

μετὰ φόβου   καὶ  χαρᾶς μεγάλης

meta phobou kai charahs megalehs.

 

and did run to bring his disciples word.

ἔδραμον ἀπαγγεῖλαι τοῖς μαθηταῖς  αὐτοῦ. 

edramon apangeilai  tois mathehtais autou.

And as they went to tell his disciples,

ὡς      δὲ ἐπορεύοντο ἀπαγγεῖλαι τοῖς μαθηταῖς  αὐτοῦ,

behold, Jesus met them, saying,

καὶ  ἰδοὺ  Ἰησοῦς   ἀπήντησεν    αὐταῖς

Kai idou Iehsous hupehntehsen autais

 

Hail, joy!

λέγων·  Χαίρετε.

legohn: Chairete!

 

And they came and held him by the feet

αἱ    δὲ προσελθοῦσαι ἐκράτησαν αὐτοῦ τοὺς πόδας

and worshipped him.

καὶ προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ. 

kai prosekunehsan autohi.

Then said Jesus unto them,

τότε λέγει αὐταῖς ὁ  Ἰησοῦς·

Be not afraid : Go!

Μὴ    φοβεῖσθε·    ὑπάγετε

Meh phobeisthe! Hupagete

 

Tell my brethren

ἀπαγγείλατε τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς μου

appangeilate tois adelphois mou

 

that they go into Galilee; there will they find Me.

ἵνα    ἀπέλθωσιν   εἰς τὴν  Γαλιλαίαν, κἀκεῖ με ὄψονται.
